傳說，月亮上有一隻兔子站在一棵桂樹下，捧著長生不老藥（holding the Elixir of Immortality in his hands.）。兔子象徵長壽（is the emblem of longevity），因為兔子的繁育能力很強（with high reproduction ability，英語中的rabbit也有此含義），因此人們都說，兔年是個特別適合生育的年份。
